But be the very best communicator you can possibly be. You feel alone in the moment, and you have to die to audience response, realizing they are probably not going to carry your picture in their wallet anymore. But you know, this is precisely what God wants me to say. Few people, if any, are converted to Christ on purely intellectual grounds. There may be poetry, refinement, historic truth, moral truth, pathos, and all the charms of rhetoric; but all will be lost, for the purposes of preaching, if the word of the Lord is not the staple of the discourse.
However, the purpose of preaching is not one-faceted but multi-faceted.

For this I toil, struggling with all his energy that he powerfully works within me. Understanding that this is the goal of preaching, I listen with new ears as I seek to become spiritually mature. I know that attending a church where this kind of preaching is practiced is what will move me more towards imaging Christ.
Understanding the purpose of preaching helps me more faithfully attend preaching because we all need to hear God speak to us and for the Holy Spirit to change us. But when I know that preaching is more than instruction, more than an exercise of the intellect, and is having a transformative impact upon my life, I pay attention differently. This is why preaching of the kind described above is vital for our coming together before God.
